W Patrick Wyman Obituary
Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2024.
W. Patrick Wyman, 93, passed away on July 31, 2024 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Son of Wayne and Marian (Downes) Wyman, he was born December 5, 1930 in Los Angeles, CA. The family moved to Hawaii when Patrick was a teenager. He graduated from Punahou School in 1949. He met his sweetheart and soon to be wife, Janet, in Hawaii, who introduced him to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on their first date. He chose to be baptized and they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Laie, Hawaii temple in 1956. He remained an active and faithful member of the church the rest of his life. "Pat" and his wife Janet, bore four children, Kari, Tommy, Stephen and Wendy. Pat was always an incredible athlete, participating in major competitions and events in beach volleyball, surfing, paddling, outrigger canoe racing and golf. He was always active in various roles in his church, from a scout master to being a bishop on BYU campus, and temple worker.
Pat spent his career in Real Estate, as an agent and broker, receiving numerous accolades and awards for his accomplishments, including Realtor of the Year. He was known as a very kind, genuine, considerate man, with a big heart and sense of humor who always had a sincere interest in other's lives, be it family, friends, or strangers. He had a special way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the room. He could befriend anyone, and many have said they were greatly influenced by his generous and warm personality.
Pat was a medical legend. He had Type I diabetes and administered his own insulin injections at least three times a day for 56 years. Every doctor was amazed at his health, stamina and active lifestyle, in spite of the demanding disease he managed so well. He defied the odds of death's door more times than can be counted.
He was the most loving and doting father and grandfather. He was a family man, known for making many family movies in the early days with his Super Eight movie camera before the popular advent of videos, documenting our family's joyous occasions on the beach and elsewhere. In Hawaii, he spent much of his time at the Outrigger Canoe Club, where he had a special affinity for the ocean, and created life-long friendships. In 1971 the family moved to Provo, Utah where he continued to have many happy memories, including being active at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, UT, creating more long-lasting friendships.
Following Janet's passing in 2007, Pat married Shirlee Burgener in 2011 and they were married for thirteen years. Pat was preceded in Heaven by his wife, Janet Clara (Christensen) Wyman, mother, Marian (Downes) Wyman and father, Wayne Clay Wyman, his youngest daughter Wendy Jane Wyman Russell (Brian), and his grandson, Justin Wyman (son of Tommy). He is survived by his wife, Shirlee (Burgener) Wyman, his eldest daughter, Kari (Wyman) Knell, his son Tommy, son Stephen (Julia), Brian Russell, eleven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Though the physical legend he was, his body finally succumbed, and we are saddened by his departure. However, we know we will see him again and feel his love and experience his humor. Who knows, he may greet future loved ones in heaven in his swim trunks, carrying a surfboard, and with Aloha in his smile.
Funeral services will be held August 7, 2024, at the LDS chapel at 5913 S. Highland Dr., Holladay, UT 84121. Viewing will start at 10:00 a.m., and service at 12:00 noon. Flowers can be sent to the aforementioned chapel address. Following the funeral, dedication of the grave and burial will be held at East Lawn Cemetery in Provo, Utah.
