Baden Infantry: Info
Note: A grenadier (/ˌɡrɛnəˈdɪər/ GREN-ə-DEER, French[ɡʁənadje] (audio speaker iconlisten); derived from the word grenade)[1] was originally a specialist soldier who threw hand grenades in battle. The distinct, combat function of the grenadier was established in the mid-17th century, when grenadiers were recruited from among the strongest and largest soldiers. By the 18th century, the grenadier dedicated to throwing hand grenades had become a less necessary specialist, yet in battle, the grenadiers were the physically robust soldiers who led assaults, such as storming fortifications in the course of siege warfare. Certain countries such as France (Grenadiers à Cheval de la Garde Impériale) and Argentina (Regiment of Mounted Grenadiers) established units of Horse Grenadiers and for a time the British Army had Horse Grenadier Guards. Like their infantry grenadier counterparts, these horse-mounted soldiers were chosen for their size and strength (heavy cavalry). Today, the term is also used to describe a soldier armed with a grenade launcher, a weapon that fires a specially-designed large-caliber projectile, often with an explosive, smoke or gas warhead. These soldiers operate as part of a fireteam.
Ulrich Neitzel: Hello Kent and Robert,
just an addition to Robert's as usual perfect translation:
I read the military affiliation of Georg Jacob Bott as Grenadier von Gfrtl. (Großfürstlichem) Badischen Leib Infanterie Regiment und der Compagnie H. Obrist von Freistedt.
Leibregiment was the name for the troop whose regimental commander was the ruling sovereign (see https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leibregiment, in German).
Obrist von Freistedt was probably Carl Friedrich Hermann von Freystedt (see https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Friedrich_Hermann_von_Freystedt, in German). He was originally an illegitimate child of Margrave Karl-Friedrich of Baden-Durlach, who later recognized him as his son. He played an important role in the (re-)organization of the Baden military.
Freystedt was the child of the illegitimate relationship between Margrave Karl Friedrich von Baden-Durlach - later Grand Duke of Baden - and Elise Barbara Schlutter († June 27, 1795) [2] . The Baden court arranged a marriage between Elise Barbara Schlutter and the Oberjäger Johannes Mono in January 1750 (a month after his birth). [3]
On April 17, 1777, Margrave Karl Friedrich officially recognized him as a son. At the instigation of the margrave and the corresponding payment, Emperor Joseph II Freystedt to the status of imperial nobility on December 30, 1777, which allowed him to call himself a baron . He founded the Baden branch of those von Freystedt .
In the historical literature, the name is sometimes also given in a different spelling: Freistedt, Freistädt.

As colonel and inspector of the Baden troops, Freystedt rewrote the Baden war articles - military law - in 1782, [6] whereby the militiamen were also to be largely protected from arbitrary violence by their superiors.
In the First Coalition War 1793/94 Freystedt led the Baden contingent in the Netherlands against the French troops . The Baden troops at that time were financed by England, but complained about the bad treatment and there were many desertions . His Margrave Karl Friedrich von Baden later changed sides and became the first Grand Duke of Baden, 9 years after the death of Baron Carl Friedrich Hermann von Freystedt. The grandson Charles of this fresh Grand Duke married the adopted daughter of Napoleon Bonaparte and daughter of Claude de Beauharnais, the Imperial Princess Stéphanie de Beauharnais (1789-1860) on April 8, 1806. At the end of 1813 he also changed sides, left the Confederation of the Rhine and thus saved his Grand Duchy for another 100 years. The male descendants of Baron Carl Friedrich Hermann von Freystedt served the Grand Ducal House of Baden until they died out in 1917.
