Special Memories of Kathy’s Birth
“Wendell was in charge of a performance in Wilshire ward in Los Angeles the night before your mama was born. I didn’t expect her for another month and I went to the performance. During the performance she began to make her eminent arrival into the world with great pain, which I didn’t understand because she wasn’t due. The next morning Wendell insisted that I go to the doctor to see what was wrong. Neither of us suspected that the baby was coming. Grandpa Noble was staying with us at the time, Joseph Edward Noble. He was on vacation. We dropped Wendell off at KHJ where he had a radio show to do. Grandpa Noble took me to the doctor. Well, the minute the doctor saw me he told me to go right across the street to the hospital and that he would meet me there. So, I watched Grandpa Noble drive off with my little boy, Larry, standing beside him in the front seat. I had no idea if Grandpa would be able to find our little home in the Hollywood Hills. I stood there and cried a little then I went to the hospital, to the maternity ward. One of the nurses told me I couldn’t be there and I said, ‘But I have to come in because I’m going to have a baby.’ She asked where my husband was. I had no husband, no suitcase. Kathleen was born. I tried to call Wendell, but they wouldn’t let me talk to him because he was on the air. I had that little baby all by myself without Granddaddy being there at all. We were so excited to have our little girl. She was born March 27, 1947. She had thick black hair. She was a beautiful little baby. She weighed six pounds. She was a wonderful little girl. She was the easiest child to raise. Whenever she felt ill she would just go up and go to bed. We’d give her some books to look at and she’d be fine. She never bothered a soul. She was my little assistant mother growing up. She helped me take care of the kids and entertained them and played house with them. She taught them and read to them. She was my sweet little mother Kathy. She was always a joy. She’s my only girl who went on a mission. She went to Australia and we are very proud of her for that. That’s where she met her sweetheart so Heavenly Father meant for her to go there.”
