Josephine Scholl 1865 - 1952

Josephine Scholl (Suess)
Josephine was born to Philip Frederick Scholl and Elizabeth Kölsch (Kelch) on the 10th of January 1865 in Manhattan,  New York City. Josephine died 11 Sep 1952, at 85 years old. She was their eighth and last child. Soon after birth the family moved to Arago, Nebraska where her father Philipp took up farming and became a very successful farmer.

"The Scholl’s didn’t have much to do with Josephine. They lived across the tracks, didn’t associate much. Josephine came to Falls City to visit aunts. She married Philip Ernst Suess and together they had five children between 1885 and 1908."   (Source: Vince Becker Josephine is his great aunt)

It was easy for Josephine to meet fall in love and marry Philip Ernst Suess as they both lived in rural Arago. Philip was born 3 years before Josephine 6 October 1862 during the Civil War. Both lived in rural Nebraska on farms and both had German heritage. Philipp's mother Katherina M. Werner was born 22 September 1843 in Graben, Germany. Philip's father August Suess was born 15 September 1835 in Graben.  Both of Philip's parents immigrated, lived, and died in to Falls City.

Obituary of Philip's mother:
Katharina Werner was born  September 22, 1843 in Graben. She came to this country with her parents in 1871 and located in Cook county, Ill.  In December of the same year the family removed to Arago, NE, where they made their permanent home. On December 15, 1861 she was  married to August Suess which union was blessed with six children, of whom three preceded her in death. She joined the Evangelical association in 1892 and was a faithful member there until her death. After a sickness of nine weeks she entered into rest. She leaves a sorrowing husband, two sons, one daughter and many relatives and friends to mourn their loss. The undersigned assisted b Rev Jno. Nanninga conducted the funeral services. Katharina Werner was 64, 16 Dec 1907 when she died. She was buried in the Zion Bethel Cemetery, Richardson County NE. Her husband lived another 18 years on his own, dying August died 31 Dec 1925.  August lived to be 90.

Josephine and Philip had six children between 1885 and 1908. Their first child Philip August Martin was born in Falls City. The other five were born in St Joseph, Missouri which is an hour, across the border, southwest of Falls City. Philipp worked on the farm  as a young man but in St Joseph he became a butcher off and on in the late 1890s. The family moved a lot. Josephine died in Mont Ida, Kansas on the 11th of September 1952. She had quite a life. Josephine was born during the Civil War and saw WWI and WWII went went through the depression. She witnessed the invention of the automobile, the airplane and modern life. All the while she lived in the rural midwest with a butcher/farmer husband and six children.

Granddaughter:
Josephine's granddaughter Viola Lucille Bennett was born to Omer & Esther (Suess) Bennett in 1913. A few days after giving birth Josephine's daughter Esther died. Viola was raised by her grandparents Philip & Josephine (Scholl) Suess. There is very little information to back up this relationship. There also is some conflicting information. One conflicting item is in the 1920 US Census and the 1925 Kansas Census Philip & Josephine list Viola as a daughter. The second conflicting item is on Viola’s headstone it has the maiden name of Suess (see back of headstone). I can find no other birth records for Viola. I can find no death or burial records for Esther. I can find no marriage record for Viola giving a maiden name. The key is tying Viola to her parents and to verify Esther’s death. The two sources I do have come from family members. 1) Viola is listed as a sibling in the Obituary of Charles Bennett. Charles is Viola’s half-brother; they share the same father. 2) Mark Aschenbrenner listed Viola as his wife’s grandmother. On Ancestry.com there are photos of the three of them together in the mid 1970’s. He states “She was born a Bennett but raised by Grandparents (Suess).” (Mark Robert)

I wish I had more, but I think this is strong enough to back up the relationship. Note: Viola names one of her daughters Esther.
