 VETERAN WORLD WAR II Robert Lynn Layton, born May 31, 1925, in Salt Lake City, Utah, son of Lynn C. and Leone G. Layton, died October 7, 2012 in Provo, Utah. He married Betty M. James in the Salt Lake Temple September 5, 1951. Always active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served as a missionary in the Argentine Mission following World War Two; as a counselor in the mission presidency in the Guatemala mission in the 1960s; with his wife, Betty, in the California, Oakland Mission, and with his wife for many years as a Church Service Missionary at the Provo, Utah, Missionary Training Center. He served as a bishop and in many other capacities in the Church. He graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City, from the University of Utah, and completed his Ph.D. at Syracuse University. During World War Two he served as a radio operator on a B-29. He was a professor of geography at Brigham Young University beginning in 1954, serving as department chair from 1961-1980. He also taught at Portland State University and the University of Manitoba. He was employed in 1965-66 as an advisor to the National Economic Planning Council in Guatemala. He wrote many academic articles, traveled extensively, and loved learning and teaching. All his life he enjoyed composing and sharing light verse. Robert was preceded in death by two brothers, William M. Layton, killed in the Korean War, and Richard Gary Layton (Susan), of Flagstaff Arizona. He is survived by his wife; seven children: Christine (Fred) Graham of Salt Lake City, Utah; James (Cindy) Layton of Jefferson City, Missouri; Joan (Durk) Merrell of Jefferson City, Missouri; Raymond (Cozy) Layton of Akeny, Iowa; Carol (Greg) Ogden of Springville, Utah; Roger (Margy) Layton of Springville, Utah; William (Lorraine) Layton of Sykesville, Maryland; 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Pleasant View 3rd Ward Chapel, 650 E. Stadium Ave., Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Thursday evening from 6 until 7 and at the church Friday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Salt Lake Cemetery.
