journal, a Robert Nelson and his wife dropped Carol off in Malta on
their way to Oregon. That is how she got there. Maybe they took
the pictures and gave them to Carol's parents? N
I do not recognize the car, but if the photo was taken by Aunt Eva when she and Uncle Clarence had taken Carol to Malta, and that fact seems to be fairly well established, then I believe that the car would have to be Uncle Clarence's car. There were not many cars around at that time and certainly not at our house. M
Kent, Carol's father kept a journal and according to him these are the days she visited Malta.
30 August 1931: Eva, Charlie and their families visit Malta.
2 February 1935: Eva and Carol attend Robert H. Gardiner's funeral in Malta.
15 September 1935: Eva and her family visit Malta.
31 July - 15 Aug 1936: Carol stays in Malta for 2 weeks.
18 October 1936: Eva, Carol and Charlie's family visit Malta.
So if the photos were taken during Carol's two week stay, then the year would have been 1936. Did Carol say they were taken during her 2 week stay? N
My grandfather was unemployed for most of his life due to rheumatoid arthritis.
Earlier in his journals, he writes about being a night watchman, etc.
He had a hard time finding work.
And his health was poor.
I only remember him on crutches.
I find it quite moving that even when he was on crutches, he would "walk" to church
sometimes in the winter. Of course it was SLC and the building was relatively close, but still.
A few of the jobs my grandfather had in his earlier adult years after his mission to England:By the age of 50, he was on crutches and had all his teeth removed.C
Night watching at Z.C.M.I.
Salzner-Warnick Farm in Idaho Falls
In charge of rental department for W.J.Halloran
With building board of the Deseret Bank Bldg.
Cashier at Intermountain Electric Co.
Health-wise some things mentioned:
All teeth extracted "in an effort to remove the cause of arthritis"
Arthritis
Rheumatism
Sciatic nerve trouble
According to Harry’s journal, on Sept 15, 1935, Robert Cushing took Eva, Harry, Carol, Kenneth and a Horne girl to Malta in Robert’s car. It was a Sunday and they stayed the day and celebrated Gloria’s birthday. So if the photo was taken on that trip, it would be Robert Cushing’s car in the photo. Makes sense to me. N

I really believe that is the answer to the old car problem. I think Robert parked as close to the house as possible so that his father, Harry, could get into the house as easy as possible on his crutches.
Also, I don't know if you got this message that Nathan sent to me on Sept. 15. He said "According to Harry's journal, a Robert Nelson and his wife dropped Carol off in Malta on their way to Oregon". So that changes things a bit. And it makes me wish that I had kept journal. It could answer a lot of questions wnen memory fails. Every once in a while my memory bank suffers bankruptcy.
Thanks for the interesting stuff you have sent lately. I liked learning that grandfather, Robert, won the checkers championship. I think that he was quite a remarkable fellow. Mary
Hi everyone, Just before Thanksgiving I received a transcription of Harry Washington Cushing's first two journals. With copying and postage it cost me about $25. Colleen Cushing Magleby who did the transcription is also transcribing H.W. Cushing's third and fourth journals. I haven't finished reading the first two journals yet, but there are quite a few references to Will and Maggie Gedge and Beatrice and Morris Low. There are also some references to Robert and Margaret Gardiner, Fred and Hope Gardiner, Charles and Althea Gardiner, and William's widow, Nellie Gardiner Bowen. There was also a reference to a W. W. Gardiner. Any ideas who that might be? If you are interested in a copy of any of the journals, please let me know how many and which ones. Depending on the amount of interest from relatives, I may just give you Colleen's email and let her make the copies. N
