Barbara Graybill 1792 - 1872

Catherine Stoker was a daughter of David Stoker and Barbara Graybill (Graybull). She was born July 29, 1829, at Bloomfield, Jackson County, Ohio. The Stoker's (Stocker's) originated from Switzerland and lived for one generation in Maryland and the next generation in North Carolina before moving to Missouri.

Barbara Graybill may have been a full blood Cherokee Indian or may have had a white mother and a Cherokee father. The Stoker's MAY have heard the gospel preached by a brother Luke Johnson on January 19, 1833. Having become "Mormons" during that early period of the Church they were subjected to the same persecution that other members of the Church are known to have had and were forced to move through the Missouri period and into Illinois... David Stoker, also, helped with the building of the Nauvoo Temple and some of the homes in the City of Nauvoo.

 Comments:
  • Regarding the Cherokee lineage. Going back and back on the line, right before the name becomes "Graybill" they were in Germany as Krehbiel, I'm sure changed when they immigrated to the USA. If she was part Cherokee, I'm pretty sure it's not from that part of the line.

  • According to what we have found, the Cherokee idea is a rumor......IF the Krehbiel heritage is truth. One thing which may contribute to that rumor is that Barbara's mother, Christina Wampler Graybill or Graybeal was kidnapped by the Shawnee Indians in Pennsylvania as part of the hostilities during the French and Indian War....pre-Revolution. Now you have me scrambling in my brain. I have the reference to the Pennsylvania Gazetter which documents the kidnapping and the return after seven years captivity. The return of the prisoners demanded by Colonel Henri Bouquet. I will try to find my documents on this and include them in Barbara Graybill's record. The NC branch of the family kept the name Graybeal, and are wonderful Christian people. We have what we have about the kidnapping and the Krehbiel heritage as a result of the research of these good cousins. Thanks Ann Dibble Call.....Barbara is my 3rd great-grandmother. The flat stone marker on the ground in front of the sign was placed by descendants of those buried here. It was erected in the 1960's and lists all of the family members known to be interred in the Stoker - Graybill Cemetery:
Cemetery notes and/or description:
The burials in the Stoker - Graybill Cemetery are of family members who came to Council Bluffs with the Mormon migration from Nauvoo, Illinois in 1846-1847. Due to the fact that this cemetery was not on land owned by the Stokers and Graybills, speculation holds that some members of the family were camped here in their oxen drawn wagons when a family member died and was buried at the campsite. Afterwards, the family continued to use this site as their burial ground for fifty years. The last burial appears to have been that of Margaret Judd Stoker in 1893.

The farm land surrounding the cemetery changed hands in 1883 which prompted George W. Graybill to purchase the 6/10th of an acre cemetery to preserve it. He secured good title to this land and then deeded it to the public. The relevant deed is recorded at the Pottawattamie Court House in Council Bluffs in Deed Book #149, page 155.

I have a lot of information on The Peter Graybeal you mention. Incidentially his father was "Old" Peter and his mom was named Mary. The Peter you mention was born in Europe and came to the US in 1864. He was actually born in 1753 not 1762 as a lot of folks seem to carry. Barbara was his daughter and she married into the Stoker Family. Barbara had a son who was a Bishop in the Mormon Church named Bishop John. I have pictures of both Barbara and John. The Peter you mention had a son named Henry Graybeal. Peter and Christina moved from Frederick County, MD where "Old" Peter and Mary lived and died, to Ashe Co., NC. Then in the early 1800s they moved to Jackson Co. OH where they are buried. Barbara and Michael (her brother) and their families joined with the Mormons in OH and then went to Missouri and to Iowa. Michael stopped in Iowa but Barbara and her son John went on to Utah with the Church group. Send me an email and I will work with you on more details.
