I don't have any direct documentation listing Stephen Jones and John Jones on the same piece of paper.
But I have four DNA reports cross-referencing him as our common ancestor.
One of Stephen Jones's daughters Sarah Jones married a William Alfred and they named their son William Alfred. John Jones had a son named William Alfred and then he name his son William Alfred. There's a bunch of other circumstantial evidence, but that's it in a nut shell. In all my research with my Jones tree they are the only ones with sons named William Alfred so it was not a common name for our family.
The reason why I haven't started calling all the Jones' in Tennessee to give them the big news is because I'm trying to find the holy Grail documentation listing them on the same piece of paper.
Stephen Jones was married to a Mary Polly Parsons (very well-documented) . In the 1850s Census John Jones has a Mary listed as his mother living with him, and in the 1860s Census there is a Polly listed as his mother living with him.

“The Alexander Jones Family”
by Joe Cain
Alex
Jones was born January 22, 1850.
His
father was Johnny Jones and his mother was Cindy Upton before she married Johnny. Lucinda (or Cindy as she was called) was born
in Overton County, Tennessee on January 17, 1816 and died November 21,
1855. Her father was Stephen Upton born
November 18, 1788, and died June 9, 1866.
Her mother Catherine (Taylor) Upton was born January 28, 1788 and died
January 28, 1846. Johnny and Cindy had
seven children they were:
Nancy
Jane – married Wilson West.
Issac
– married Becky Mahan

John
Decatur - married Margaret Bohannon
James
K. Polk – married Martha Bohannon
Jackson
– killed in Civil War.
Alexander tried to enlist in the
Confederate forces as a drummer boy when he was 12 years old. They would not allow him to do so.
Marion
– died of typhoid fever during the Civil War.
After Cindy died in 1855, Johnny
Jones married Abby Livesay.
They
had 10 children, they were:
Andrew
– married Adaline Whiteaker – then Mary Jane Neal.
Wilson
– married Emma Hunter
Edward
Alford
– married Janie Herman
Bluford
– married Polly Stamps
Samantha
– married Will Barnes
Mary
– married Calvin Barnes
Julia
– married Richard Copeland
Syrilda
– married Jim Stamps
Margaret
– Josiah Bowman
Johnny
died July 12, 1876.
Alexander
first married Lucy Ann Glasgow in Tennessee on January 7, 1875. She was born July 20, 1856. Their first child was Mary Lucinda (our Aunt
Cindy) born December 25, 1875. Their
second child was Johnny born July 23, 1877 and died when he was four years old
in 1881. Alex’s wife Lucy Ann, died
December 9, 1877. On July 13, 1879 Alex
married Lucy Ann’s younger sister Margaret Emily Glasgow who was born August 7,
1861. Alex and Margaret had 10 children:
Bertha
– born July 19, 1880
Beulah
– born November 28, 1881, when Beulah was a baby Alex and Margaret moved from
Obion County, to Wise County, Texas near Chico.
Alex’s younger brother Wilson also moved to Chico. They made the trip by covered wagon crossing
the Mississippi on a ferry boat.
All
of their other children were born near Chico, Texas.
Rosa
– born January 25, 1883 and died October 7, 1885
Grover
Cleveland Jones – born April 18, 1886
Lizzie
Jones – born October 15, 1887
Alford
Jones – born March 22, 1889
Zona
Jones – born November 10, 1890, died March 19, 1894.
Chares
Wilson (Buddy) Jones – born August 16, 1892
Delia
Jones – born February 28, 1895
Berta
Jones – born February 2, 1897
They
were not able to buy and land in the Chico, Texas area. They were having to rent, and land was poor,
so they were having a hard time getting by.
The
story of free land in Western Oklahoma reached them and early in 1898 Alex, his
son-in-law Lafayette Street, and some other men came to the Beckham County area
scouting for land. They were successful
in locating homesteads near what later became the town of Carter. They went back to Texas, the trip taking
about 6 weeks by wagon. In November
1898, Alex, Lafayette and some of the their neighbors loaded their families in
covered wagons and started for Oklahoma.
The weather was very cold and the children sleeping on pallets under the
wagons would wake up with frost all over their beds. They reached their destinations about
December 28, 1898.
Alex
built a half dugout (just one large room dug into the ground with dirt
floor). Here they lived for several
years until he could build a house.
My
father A.O. Cain married Beulah Jones (Alex’s daughter) in 1901. My other grandfather Wesley Can helped Alex
build his house. While they were
building the house, Bertha (only 4 or 5 years old) swallowed a nail. After that grandpa Cain always called her his
nail eater.
Going
back to 1895 in Texas all executions were by public hanging. In that year a black man was hung at Decatur,
Texas for killing a deputy sheriff. Alex
took his entire family to see this event.
The condemned man asked that a few “church songs” be sang before he was
hung. Volunteers were called for and
Alex being a good singer got some other men he knew and they sang several songs
for the man. Then the trap was
sprung. This sight man an awful
impression on my mother, Beulah who was 14 years old at this time.
Life
in the dugout was rough but they did stay warm.
The worst problem they had was fleas.
Fleas were particularly in the dirt floor of the half dugout. Margaret would keep kerosene soaked rags tied
around the table legs to keep fleas off of the table. At night there would be a race among all the
small children to make their pallets on the table so they could sleep
undisturbed by the fleas. Elizabeth
(Aunt Lizzie) rolled off the table one night.
John
Decatur Jones came to Oklahoma shortly after Alex and Margaret did. John had been busy making moonshine whiskey
in Tennessee and the revenuers caught up with him. He had to leave Tennessee pretty fast to get
away from them. Alfred Barnes, Samantha
and Mary’s brother-in-law also left Tennessee with a posse shooting at
him. Someone asked him in later years
how he managed to escape. He replied, “I
ran on the Bias” meaning zig-zagging.
Alex’s first daughter Lucinda (who died June 5, 1974) married Lafayette
Street in Chico Texas on October 25, 1895.
Their first daughter Lucy was born in Texas January 21, 1897. The other children were all married in Oklahoma. Lucinda and Lafayette had another daughter
Clara (Porter) and three sons Claud (deceased), Averill and Earl after they
moved to the Carter, Oklahoma area. All
of the children lived in the Carter area except Alford. He and his wife Mittie moved back to Electra,
Texas where he worked in the oil fields after farming a few years.
Bertha
(died in 1948) married Sam Simpson. They farmed south east of Carter. Sam’s brother Oscar Simpson started the first
school in the area. Bertha and Sam had
three daughters and three sons. Two of
the girls Lucille and Ruby are deceased.
Sammy Lee, the other daughter and Cecil, Melvin and Billy are all
living.
Beulah
(died in 1968) married A.O. Cain in 1901.
Their first children were twins Clarence and Clinton both deceased. They had a daughter Leona Fowler of Irving,
Texas and two sons Joe and Alton who both live in the Carter area.
Grover
Cleveland (Cleve) (died 1950) married Effie Gaswick (died 1979). They had one son G.C. Jr. who died in
1985. Lizzie Jones married J.D. Carter
who died in 1972. Aunt Lizzie celebrates
her 99th birthday October 15, 1986.
She is still keeping house and enjoying life to the fullest. She had three children, Elmer (deceased),
Betty Joe and Milton.
Alford
married Mittie Cornelius, their children were Keetah, Buve, Donchin and Joy all
deceased and living are Oleta, Jack, Bill and another daughter Bobby.
Charles
Wilson (Buddy) (died 1979) married to Cordelia Rogers (deceased) had a son C.W.
Jr. who died when he was three years old.
They have two daughters Cuba Lee and Charlene. Delia Jones (died 1984) married to Bill
Carter (died 1955) had a son Oren that died while a baby and a son in Wichita
Falls, Texas, Alvie known as Tutor.
Berta Jones the youngest married Ralph Van Buren, a marine in World War
I. Their oldest son is Jodie Lee of
Harrah, Oklahoma. One son Harley died
when about 6 or 7 years old. Their
daughter Joyce (Wayne) lives in Elk City, Oklahoma. Berta makes her home in Carter.
After
Alex and Margaret moved into the half dugout on their homestead, they had to
live there several years before they were able to build a house. During this time the whole family had
smallpox. A neighbor, Homer Bunton found
out they were all sick. He would come by
the cellar getting close enough to make himself heard. He would ask what they needed (groceries,
etc) and then go to the store over at Poarch (which was five miles east and one
mile south of the present town of Carter) and get what they needed and take it
to them. Luckily they all recovered with
no bad after effects.
In
1912 Alex and Margaret, their daughter Berta and son Alford and Alford’s wife
Mittie moved to near Camp Verde, Arizona where Alex bought the “Bullpen”. The Bullpen was an 18 acre fruit
orchard. They raised apricots, peaches,
pears, plums and apples which they sold commercially. Alex had bought the orchard from his brother
Issac’s two sons Elmer and Arthur. After
operating the orchard for three years he sold it back to the same two men and
moved back to Oklahoma. After Margaret
died on February 21, 1921, Alex made his home with Elizabeth (Aunt Lizzie) and
J.D. Carter. He made frequent trips back
down into Texas to visit relatives and to buy honey. He bought honey down in South Texas and
shipped it back to Oklahoma. He would
then peddle it all over the country. I
can still remember him coming to our house when I was a small boy with the back
of his buggy filled with gallons of honey.
He died March 9, 1936
After
Margaret died, Buddy and Cleve both had houses where they lived on Alex’s land
which they farmed for several years until the farm was sold to Lee White.
The
descendants of Alex’s father Johnny still have a Johnny Jones family reunion
the second Sunday of August in the Community Center in Allgood, Tennessee.
Alexander
and Margaret, his brother John, their daughter Lucinda, Bertha, Beulah and
Delia together with their husbands and Cleve and his wife and Lizzie’s husband
J.D. Carter are all buried in Poarch Cemetery 14 miles south of Elk City,
Oklahoma. Buddy and his wife are buried
in Carter Cemetery.
April's mom side of the family (Nivens and
Garretts) are from Overton County, Tennessee. The Garrett
family have their own cemetary located in Allons, TN dating back
two centuries. The 1850 Census Records shows John "Johnny"
Jones residing there with his family and another Jones named Polly along with
her family and another family living with them with the last names of
Woody. Also, Lucinda, Johnny's wife was born in Overton County and
together many of their kids lived and married in Overton County.
Research:
Descendants of John C. Jones
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN C.1 JONES was born October 1786 in
Virginia, and died November 1862 - Chestnut Cemetery, Morgan County,
Alabama. He married SARAH BLALOCK
January 31, 1830.
Notes for JOHN C. JONES:
John C. Jones was a Methodist minister. The early
settlers built a chapel for worship. It was called the "Chapel"
however later it was renamed "The Jones Chapel Methodist Church".
"In 1817, long before Alabama became a state, the
Jones family came from North Carolina and settled in the Massey -community. Had
the territory of North Carolina not become so overcrowded according to the
Jones family they would never have made such a long trip. The roads were more
of a trail than road, but the caravan moved slowly along with the prospect of
seeing the big river known as the Tennessee."
From Founders Day Jubilee 1875-1975 (A history of
Falkville, Ala.)
Other sources say the Jones family came from Virginia.
And there are several reports as to where the Jones family lived in Morgan
County, Alabama. John C. Jones did enter land with the U. S. Government in
Southwest Morgan County in 1831 (Massey community). Morgan County maps show a
Jones branch running into and winding through Day’s Gap. We feel sure this
branch was named for our Jones family.
JOHN C. JONES was the father of seven children (perhaps
more). John W.C. Jones son of Rev. John C. littlest was called Turkey Tail
because he always carried a fan made from the tail feathers of a wild turkey,
John W.C. Jones married Eliza Gibson and they lived many years in the Jones
Chapel Community in Cullman County (Winston County then). Records show that he
owned land in Morgan County, too, A friend said of him, “John W. C. Jones was
industrious and reared a good family.” The 1860 census for Winston County lists
John W. C. Jones of Jones Chapel area as a stock raiser with property worth
$20,955. Another son, Claiborn A. C. Jones, a Methodist minister, was the first
pastor of McKendree Church. Late in life he married Margaret A, Morris. "Uncle
Clabe" is described as "greatly useful and beloved". He was the
friend of all and the delight of children. His apostolic prayers lifted the
gloom and sorrow from hundreds of bruised hearts. Rev. C.A.C. Jones witnessed
Stephen C. Penn's Will and united many couples in marriage. He is buried in
Andrew Chapel Cemetery. Druid David Richard Alexander Jones, son of Rev. John
C. Jones. Married Elizabeth Penn and is the father of Andrew J. Jones. A
daughter Martha F. Jones married Rev, James Wilson Turpentine, and a saddler.
Another daughter, Mary A. C. Jones was the second wife of Capt. Solomon S.
Long.
An article in "The Alabama Enquirer" dated
January 30, 1890, and written by A.G. Copeland says, "Another son of Rev.
John C. Jones was a local preacher in Morgan County, but moved before the war
to Missouri. He was a successful man." Mr. Copeland mentions another son
but doesn't name him.
Mr. Copeland writes "Rev. John C. Jones was a
Virginian by birth and education. About seventy years ago he was admitted into
the Virginia Conference a classmate of Dr. Early. John C. Jones was in his
young manhood regarded as the equal in the pulpit and platform with that gifted
son of Virginia. Unfortunately he left the itinerary early in life, and became
a local preacher. True in this last relation he was in a degree useful, but in
the pursuits of a secular calling, in contact with trade and traffic; he lost
much of the higher element of his divine calling, In prayer he was wonderfully
gifted. He talked and pleaded with God, like the Divinity was no stranger to
him." -from 1890 Newspaper
Notes A. G. Copeland was a Civil War physician in the Day
Gap
Area and was a minister. He was minister at McKendree
Church in 1871. He lived in Woodlawn in 1890.
Dr. Early was Bishop John Early. In Dr. Early’s diary, he
wrote "spent the night with Brother Claiborn." If John C. Jones was
John Claiborn Jones perhaps Dr. Early was speaking of him.
From Page 83, Combing Cullman County, by Margaret J.
Jones
"A Methodist minister, John C, Jones, moved in the
Jones Chapel area about 1855. The devout followers of Methodism among these
early settlers soon built a small log church, which was named simply The
Chapel.... Later it was changed to Jones Chapel Methodist Church. Doc Jones, a
grandson of Jones Chapel's founder later became a well-known Methodist
preacher"
The 1860 Census shows Rev. John C. Jones living with a
daughter, Mary Ann Long. He is buried in the Chestnut Grove (or Long) Cemetery
near Decatur

Winston County people brought about Early settlements
from the adjoining counties filtering into the present Cullman County,
The records from Winston County were destroyed August 5,
1881, when the courthouse at Double Springs was burned with a11 the records.
But there were settlements in that portion of Winston that became a part
Cullman. John Wes1ey Crosley Jones moved
into the east end of Winston in his early forties near the present Jones
Chapel, which is fourteen miles from the City of Cullman, and here reared his
one daughter and seven sons.

More research: Hi Kent,
I came across your Gathering Gardiners website yesterday.
I am curious about your John C Jones b 1813, possibly in VA...and the John C Jones you name as his dad b 1786 in VA.
I am a descendant of Davidson Jones (b 1766 VA - d aft 1850 Overton Co., TN).
Davidson is documented in the census:
- 1810: Buckingham Co., VA (New Canton)
--> In 1810, listed next to a John C Jones (b 1785 - 1794)
--> In 1820, this John C Jones (b 1776 - 1794) appears to still be in the same location.
- 1820: Overton Co., TN
- 1830: Cumberland Co., KY
- 1840: Clinton Co., KY
- 1850: Overton Co., TN
--> In 1850, in household of son Fleming Jones.
Next door to son Abraham Jones.
Also, next door to likely son, James Jones
No matter what you find online, no one really can prove who Davidson Jones' parents really were. I'm trying to figure that out. Because documents supporting connections back are hard to come by at this point, I'm starting to supplement with Y-DNA testing.
I'm trying to find related individuals. Ones who may have been sons, brothers, close relatives from the same tree as Davidson Jones. It may help me reconstruct a family tree or understand the family a bit better.
I already have Y-DNA results for a direct descendant of Davidson Jones' son Abraham..and Davidson Jones' son Fleming. That gives me a baseline. Now I'm looking at other likely lines to test.
I am particularly interested in your John C Jones. There appears to have been at least one other John C Jones in another county in VA around that time, but circumstantial evidence in the census record makes it seem like yours might be worth checking out.
I initially came across it looking at the Joneses in Overton Co., TN in the 1850 census. That's how I found your John C Jones (b 1813 VA). I know that you all are thinking that he might have been born in another state. But even the Polly Jones who is part of that household (poss sister / sister-in-law?) is listed as b in VA (in 1800).
I see that your elder John C Jones appears to be documented in Alabama in the census starting in 1830. So it's possible that it's the same John C Jones that is in the 1810 & 1820 census in Buckingham Co., VA.
What do you think?
Is there anything you know about your family that would exclude this possibility?
If there's nothing strong to contradict this hypothesis,
I would like to approach one of your Jones cousins, to see if any would be willing to do a Y-DNA test.
I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Another letter
HI Kent,
Thank you for your note back.
And thank you for sharing about your 1st wife and family. I'm sorry for your loss. I think it's lovely that you honor her thru genealogy. Congrats on finding your new home base. I totally understand about wanting to be near library resources to aid in research.
Algood is in Putnam County, TN. From how I understand it, that was one of the counties partially constructed from pieces of Overton County. My family mostly has been in Overton & Pickett, though apparently some Fentress snuck in there.
That being said, I haven't been to TN since I was a little girl. I've been doing most of my research online, or thru books, or asking my cousin who is local if she has info. So far I've done pretty well. But it's getting to the point where I may need to take it to the next level. And certainly I've had enough correspondence with family these days that it's about time for me to take a trip out there anyway. I may be going to a Holt family reunion this summer. Think it's in Pickett County.
I'm not really sure what land records are available for the area. For reference, I'm using Edythe Rucker Whitley's "Overton County, Tennessee, Genealogical Records."
Here is what she says on the matter (p9):
"OVERTON COUNTY, WILLS, DEEDS, MINUTES, ETC.
Note: Since the records of Fentress, Pickett, Putman and Jackson are either all or partly
destroyed, the records which have not been destroyed for Overton County are of
vital importance to the genealogist or historian. The early Overton County books
contain a bit of everything. There is no Will Book 1870 in Overton County. The early
marriages are not recorded in a marriage book, but scattered through the deeds
and minutes, or have been lost completely. There are wills also found scattered
through the deed books for the years prior to 1870. The marriage book begins
about 1865."
I searched her Overton County reference book, and I only found 1 reference to a John Jones. In this case, the name was in a list of people who had served in the War of 1812. No further info.
My cousin says this about Overton County land records:
"Overton Country has preserved most of the land documents. The people who work in the register of deeds office are friends of mine. I was in there last summer and they told me they were going to put all the indexes on computer so that they would be easy to search through. I don't know where they are in the process, but hopefully they are making progress."
For my part, I have no idea what land records may still exist in Putnam. But seeing as your 1st wife's ancestor is documented in the 1850 census in Overton County, Overton may be a good place to start.
I'm not sure if the Overton County book I've been using is comprehensive. If it is, then perhaps there aren't available land docs in county for your wife's ancestor. Can't say at present.
I am interested in corresponding with a researcher of your John Jones family tree. And if not that line in particular, then a researcher who may be trying (like me) to sift thru Jones lines. That would be just fine. If you track down that email address, I'd love to have it.
Hope this helps.
Best, R.S.
